The lesson included the use of ghazals (Hindi/urdupeoms) to understand happiness and internal peace. We wanted to understand different perspectives on happiness and acknowledge internal peace and happiness as important pursuits rather than singularly focusing on materialistic happiness and pleasure. There were 10 participants in the event. The event began with a discussion on what happiness means to different people and then we discussed ghazals (poems) that defined our idea of happiness.
This idea was a broader/larger vision of doing good rather than materialistic and instant things. We made an attempt to connect this with GCED and SEL. Listening to ghazals and writing ghazals is completely connected with emotions and these activities help students understand and manage emotions very well and thus, it is connected with SEL. Being aware and being open to varied perspectives is an important element in GCED and thus the class is connected with GCED.
The ghazals and the ghazal writers are appreciated as a part of this lesson and this is super important in an era when we are occupied with lyrics that do not make sense. The young people will be more aware of how meaningful ghazals have been and they will understand the beauty while they create their own ghazals or poems. The Activity was mostly led by the students or the participants and all participant took home new and different perspectives and were encouraged to look at happiness through various lenses. Through the event, we explored happiness, we attempted to preserve and promote an element of heritage (Ghazals) and We tried to connect with the self and reflect.
